The 12 Steps of NA
- We admitted we were powerless over our addiction—that our lives had become unmanageable. This step encourages members to accept that addiction cannot be controlled and that they need help to regain control.
- Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. Members develop faith in a higher power or collective strength beyond themselves to guide recovery.
- Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. This step involves surrendering self-will and trusting the recovery process and higher power.
- Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Members honestly assess their behaviors and the impact of addiction on their lives.
- Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. This step fosters accountability and openness through confession to trusted individuals.
- Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Members prepare themselves to let go of negative traits and behaviors.
- Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. This step involves seeking humility and transformation.
- Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all. Members identify those affected by their addiction and prepare to make reparations.
- Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. This step focuses on repairing relationships responsibly.
- Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. Ongoing self-assessment and humility are emphasized here.
- Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will and the power to carry that out. This step supports spiritual growth and mindfulness.
- Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts and to practice these principles in all our affairs. Members commit to service and living the NA principles daily.
