The 12 Steps of NA

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a nonprofit fellowship for recovering drug addicts across Albuquerque, Bernalillo, New Mexico, and the United States. NA outlines a 12-step program to help members achieve and maintain drug abstinence through peer support and spiritual growth. The 12 steps are:

  1. Admit powerlessness over addiction and that lives have become unmanageable
  2. Come to believe that a Power greater than oneself can restore sanity
  3. Make decision to turn will and lives over to care of God as understood
  4. Make searching and fearless moral inventory of selves
  5. Admit to God, selves, and another human being the exact nature of wrongs
  6. Become entirely ready to have God remove all defects of character
  7. Humbly ask God to remove shortcomings
  8. Make list of all persons harmed and become willing to make amends to them all
  9. Make direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others
  10. Continue to take personal inventory and when wrong, promptly admit it
  11. Seek through prayer and meditation to improve conscious contact with God as understood, praying only for knowledge of God’s will and the power to carry that out
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, try to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all affairs

The 12 steps aim to motivate NA members to make positive life changes, achieve ongoing personal growth, help others in recovery, and live drug-free productive lives.
