The 12 Steps of NA

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a nonprofit fellowship for recovering drug addicts. NA members follow a set of guiding principles called the 12 steps to help achieve and maintain addiction recovery. The 12 steps are:

  1. Admit powerlessness over addiction and that lives have become unmanageable.
  2. Come to believe a Power greater than oneself can restore sanity.
  3. Make the decision to turn your will and life over to taking care of God as understood.
  4. Make a searching and fearless moral inventory of yourself.
  5. Admit to God, ourselves, and another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. Become entirely ready to have God remove all defects of character.
  7. Humbly ask God to remove your shortcomings.
  8. Make a list of all those harmed and become willing to make amends.
  9. Make direct amends with such people whenever possible, except when doing so would injure them or others.
  10. Continue to take personal inventory and promptly admit mistakes.
  11. Seek through prayer and meditation to improve conscious contact with God as understood, praying only for knowledge of God’s will and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, try to carry this message to other addicts and practice these principles in all affairs.
