The 12 Steps of NA
- We admitted we were powerless over our addiction—that our lives had become unmanageable. This step initiates acceptance of addiction’s impact and the need for help.
- Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. Encourages members to find hope in outside support beyond personal efforts.
- Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. Members commit to spiritual guidance, however they define a higher power.
- Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. This step involves honest self-examination to identify past behaviors and their consequences.
- Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. Sharing faults openly to alleviate guilt and isolation.
- Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Preparing mentally and spiritually to change harmful patterns.
- Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. Actively seeking transformation with humility.
- Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. Acknowledging the effects of addiction on others.
- Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Taking responsible action to repair relationships.
- Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. Maintaining ongoing self-awareness and accountability.
- Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him. Enhancing spiritual growth to guide daily life.
- Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. Sharing recovery experiences and living by NA principles.
