There have been 2 reports in the media this week about children that have ingested their mother's methadone.

One has sadly died, and the other will be disabled for life.

Unfortunately children ingest ALL kinds of medication every day and OD, but the only ones that make it to the press are the ones about methadone, so we have to be extra careful as methadone patients.

Please keep your medication not only out of reach of your children, but out of sight. If they cannot see it, they will not have opportunity to be curious about it.

Also, if you have lockboxes, don't decorate them with stickers and the like that would make it look attractive to a child. It's only going to inflame their curiosity and make them want to see what's inside.

The cases like this that hit the media make it seem to the general public that all people on methadone must be terrible parents, as there are stories like this about child ingestion at least every month.

We can do our bit to safeguard children, and change public perception by making sure that we keep our medications safely away from little hands.

For example, storing your medication in the fridge is not a good idea, as it's easily accessible to a child.

Talking about this at your clinic, and telling people how YOU store your medications out of reach and SIGHT of your kids will make them think twice about what they are doing hopefully!

ARGH! This fuels negative press... and negative press fuels stigma... and stigma continues to fuel the misinformation and myths we're trying so hard to fight. :-\ Keep your take homes locked up and safe, folks!
